The Mention of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the Torah and Gospel

In this article, we explore some clear evidences of the prophecy of Muhammad ﷺ that remain in the altered ancient scriptures. The truth shines through many witnesses, enhancing its praises.

Prophecies of Muhammad ﷺ in the Torah (Old Testament)

One of the signs in the Torah is found in the Book of Deuteronomy, where it was said to Moses:

“I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brethren, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. And whoever does not listen to my words that he speaks in my name, I will hold him accountable. [In some versions: ‘I will be the avenger’]. But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in my name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.”
[Deuteronomy 18:18-20]

This prophecy points to none other than the unlettered Arab Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, for several reasons:

  1. “A Prophet Like You” – Deuteronomy also states that “no prophet has arisen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face” (34:10).
    • James L. Dow, in the Collins Gem Dictionary of the Bible, notes:
“The only man in history who can even remotely be compared to him [Moses] is Mahomet [Muhammad ﷺ].”
This is affirmed by Allah in the Quran:
      (إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ رَسُولًا شَاهِدًا عَلَيْكُمْ كَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَى فِرْعَوْنَ رَسُولًا)
      (Surah Al-Muzzammil: 15)
  2. “From Among Their Brethren” – Directed at the Children of Israel, “their brethren” refers to the descendants of Isma’il عليه السلام.
    • This usage appears in Genesis:”He shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”
      (Genesis 16:12)
  3. “I Will Put My Words in His Mouth” – The book of Isaiah mentions: “Then they give it to one who cannot read, saying, ‘Read this, please,’ and he says, ‘I am not learned.’”
    (Isaiah 29:12)
    • Known from the Seerah, the Prophet ﷺ responded similarly at his first revelation:
      “I cannot read.”
  4. “He Shall Speak to Them All That I Command Him” – In the Quran, we see:
    (قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ)
    (Surah Al-Ikhlas: 1)
    (يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ قُلْ فِيهِمَا إِثْمٌ كَبِيرٌ…
    (Surah Al-Baqarah: 219)
Indeed, Muhammad ﷺ “does not speak from desire; it is but a revelation revealed.”
    (Surah An-Najm: 3-4)
  5. “In My Name” – The Quranic chapters begin:“In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.”

Further Signs of Muhammad ﷺ in the Bible

In Deuteronomy, it is also stated:

“And this is the blessing with which Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death. He said: The Lord came from Sinai, dawned over them from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran.”
(Deuteronomy 33:1-2)

  • Sinai – Where Allah spoke to Moses عليه السلام
  • Seir – Region of Prophet Isa عليه السلام’s birth
  • Paran – Identified with Makkah, where Ibrahim عليه السلام left Hajar and Isma’il عليهما السلام. This is confirmed in Genesis:“He dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran.”
    (Genesis 21:21)

Further, the Valley of Baca mentioned in Psalm 84:6 aligns with the description of Makkah in the Quran:
(إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَيْتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِي بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكًا وَهُدًى لِّلْعَالَمِينَ)
(Surah Aal-e-Imran: 96)

In the Encyclopædia Biblica, the valley is cited as related to balsam, an Arabian plant found around Makkah. The pilgrimage journey described by pilgrims in Psalm 84:6-8 resonates with those traveling between Safa and Marwa, mirroring the Hajj rituals.

In conclusion, these prophecies in the ancient scriptures, with all their alterations, still hint at the coming of the final Prophet, Muhammad ﷺ, as verified by Islamic sources.
